Its generation however, remains a matter of concern, in the aspects surrounding the environmental impact incurred as a result of the processing of our planet’s energy resources. Until a sharp transition is made to self-sustaining renewable sources, most industries, especially the solar sector, remain heavily reliant on energy provided by fossil fuel sources, to develop their technologies. With the millions of barrels of oil spilled into the environment annually, the question then becomes: Is it necessary that we continue to drill for fossil fuels during this energy transition phase OR do upgrade and use the millions of barrels oil collected from spills so that we have cleaner ecosystems, when fossil fuels are no longer an energy necessity? OUR PROPOSITION NANOARC’s division suggests we pursue the latter approach. What we do, is engage in the provision of nanotechnology -based solutions for CO2 management and the mitigation of toxic gas and chemical emissions in air, water and land. We support environmental organisations engaging the fossil fuel domain, to redefine their business models in how oil spills are managed and the associated waste generated through reforming processes is handled. We provide nanotechnological solutions for the efficient desulphurisation , removal of harmful chemicals residue in water and separation of heavy metals . In a further step, we provide high surface area nanocatalysts for the effective upgrade of spilled oil into high energy density fuels, via nanocatalytic-reforming. As such, the recycled waste oils can be upgraded and used, in order to minimise the need for fossil fuel drilling and fracking processes that negatively impact global ecosystems , economies and air quality . When a fuel is energy dense, less is required for longer periods of usage and as a result, lower emissions are achieved per unit time and distance. Our contribution fundamentally involves offering strategic consultancy advice on how to best achieve a cradletocradle outcome and simultneously provide the necessary nanomaterial solutions to achieve those outcomes. THE OUTLOOK In a nutshell, we seek to support the clean-up processes of oil spills and enable the achievement of waste conversion into fuel-efficient systems as a key measure of progress. By so doing, it will become possible to use less fuel over long range travel, via the enhancement of fuel performance, thus lowering both CO2 emission levels and the need for replenishment. Until we are able to completely transition to zero-emission systems, such fuel-efficient systems will be of vital consequence, in long distance aviation travel with lower CO2 emissions and lower frequency for refuelling vessels on earth and/or in future explorative journeys undertaken beyond our planet, where weight-reduction is a necessary asset and fuel longevity is vital.
